The undergraduate music theory curriculum follows a modular structure, giving students more flexibility and choice in how they progress through their studies.
All students begin by taking the Music Theory Diagnostic Exam, which determines their starting point:
- MUS 120: Foundations of Western Music Theory – for students needing a stronger foundation
- MUS 130: Diatonic and Chromatic Harmony – for students ready to move into more advanced topics
Both courses count toward the required music theory credits and are offered every fall and spring.
After completing MUS 130, students can choose from a rotating selection of upper-level music theory courses tailored to their interests and degree concentration.
Refer to the for details on specific theory requirements by program.
