Graduate-level work, done by the most motivated undergraduate students
Agreeing to supervise an Honors student's Baccalaureate thesis is accompanied by almost identical responsibilities as those associated with supervising a master's student's thesis in your field. The scope of the thesis may be more limited than you would expect from a graduate student, but the rigor and quality of writing should be on the same level.
Committee Members
The student writing their thesis will choose a thesis chair and two other faculty members for their committee, but they can choose up to five committee members total.
- At least three of the committee members must be graduate faculty in order to serve as the student's committee.
- Two committee members should be in the student's discipline. They may choose faculty from their discipline or someone from another field to fulfill the role of the third committee member.
- The Honors Program will send a member of the Honors staff to observe prospectus and thesis defenses, but the outside observer will not have voting rights.
Thesis Prep Classes
Faculty is in control of final decisions, but we help students prepare while developing their researching and writing skills.
- Students enroll in three thesis prep classes: HONR 497, 498, and 499.
- In these courses, the students will get help choosing their committee and finalizing their methods.
- They will also be required to writing a short prospectus that will be approved by their committee and defended.
- The thesis chair will also be involved in providing feedback and evaluation for the student's Individual Development Plan in HONR 498 and 499.
